External Funding

The Graduate School offers resources designed to support graduate students in identifying and applying for external funding sources. These sources support students' various research and scholarly activities and are awarded by entitites outside of ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ.  This page provides resources available to search for funding, upcoming workshops, and some award announcements. 


To search for external funding sources, access the Pivot Funding Database or other publicly available databases listed on this page. Before you apply for external funding, let us know by emailing gradfund@utep.edu.

Jess Hay Endowment for Chancellor’s Graduate Student Research Fellowships

About: The Jess Hay Endowment for Chancellor’s Graduate Student Research Fellowships is a graduate fellowship opportunity established by former UT System Regent Jess Hay, who passed away in 2015. Mr. Hay was an extraordinary advocate and visionary leader for the UT System, as this endowment evidences. This one-time award of $15,000 was designed to tie graduate education to timely and high-quality research benefiting the State of Texas.

Deadline: Students must be nominated by ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ for this award. To be considered, applicants must submit their materials via the by Monday, June 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM MST.

Eligibility: Must be a current ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Master’s or doctoral student engaged in research who will complete their degree no earlier than May of 2027.

How to Apply: Applicants must submit the along with the following attachments.

  • An up-to-date resume or cv.
  • An unofficial ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ transcript.
  • A two-page Research Statement outlining the applicant’s research and its significance.
  • A one-page Personal Statement outlining the applicant’s academic and professional trajectory.
  • A one-page letter of support from the faculty member supervising the applicant’s thesis or dissertation.

Important! The total amount of financial assistance a graduate student receives for the 2026-27 academic year cannot exceed the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Cost of Attendance. More information is available here: /financial-aid/more-information/cost-of-attendance.html.

 

Texas Leadership Research Scholars Program 

About: Texas Leadership Research Scholars (TLRS)  is a premier scholarship initiative that grants selected high achieving doctoral students a scholarship to attend a Texas public research or emerging research university. Beyond financial support, recipients benefit from a peer network, mentoring, and other opportunities to unleash their full potential.

Deadline: Students must be nominated by ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ for this award. To be considered, applicants must submit their materials via the by Monday, June 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM MST.

Eligibility:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a research doctoral degree program at a participating institution.
  • Demonstrate the student has either graduated from a Texas public high school during the 10 years preceding the date of the student's application.
  • Have applied for any financial aid assistance.
  • Be economically disadvantaged by either (a) having received a Pell Grant while enrolled as an undergraduate student; or (b) having received a TEXAS grant or Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) as an undergraduate student; or (c) having received a Leadership Scholarship as an undergraduate student.
  • Be nominated by the institution of higher education where the student is enrolled on the basis of merit and leadership potential.

Cientifico Latino, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization and offers a fellowship database for STEM-related pursuits.

Pathways to Science maintains a page specifically for prospective and current STEM graduate students to search for fellowships, funding opportunities and to access other resources. 

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) maintains a page called GRAPES which includes several hundred scholarships, grants, fellowships, and postdoctoral awards.
