E-Exams (In-class)

Overview

Last updated May, 2026

In-Class E-Exams is a guide designed to help you deliver Blackboard exams in the classroom. To ensure a smooth and successful experience for both you and your students, we recommend following the steps outlined on this page.

IMPORTANT: Before continuing, please note that Blackboard tests must already be created and deployed, meaning the test must be available on your Blackboard content page.

1. Guide for students

Provide the following instructions to your students to help them prepare for test day.

Important: Make sure your device and LockDown Browser are up to date before the exam.

  • .
  • Contact Technology Support if you need assistance updating your device’s operating system.
  • Students who do not have a compatible device may rent a laptop free of charge from Equipment Checkout in Library 300.

Students should complete the mock test provided by the instructor in the same classroom where the actual exam will be held. This helps confirm that the device, internet connection, and testing environment work properly. This step is especially important when using a borrowed laptop.

If you run into issues, take a screenshot or picture of the error you receive and send it to helpdesk@utep.edu so we can assist you with your issue.

Make sure you are connected to the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Secure Wi‑Fi using your ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ credentials when you arrive in class, and remain connected for the entire duration of your test.

2. Create a mock test

To have a successful e-exam in class, it’s important to let your students test their devices beforehand so they don't run into problems on exam day. A vast majority of problems can be prevented with a few extra steps.

Test Set-Up

1. Create a test in your Blackboard course named “Mock Test” and add 1 or 2 questions (more can be added if needed).

2. After all your questions have been added click on the Gear icon on the top right to access the Assessment Settings and make sure the following options are configured.

  • Select "No Due Date".
  • Change grade category to "No Category" (Will exclude test from grade calculations).
  • Allow unlimited attempts.
  • All other settings can be set to your preference.

3. Enable Respondus LockDown Browser on your mock test.

  • Under the Assessment Settings find Assessment Security → Respondus.
  • Click on LockDown Browser Dashboard.
  • Locate the Mock Test.
  • Click the drop down arrow and click on Settings → Select Require LockDown Browser for this exam. You can also optionally turn on Respondus Monitor here if needed.

NOTE:NOTE: If you turn on Monitor, you must manually enable the use of iPads in the Monitor settings. Other settings, such as allowing the use of Excel or Word files, can be turned on by hitting [+] Advanced Settings.

  • Click Save + Close.

4. Make sure the mock-test is Visible to students for the duration of the course so students can test as needed.

Important:Tip:

Consider enabling an access code in the assessment settings (under assessment security) to ensure students can’t launch the exam outside of the classroom. This access code can be regenerated at any time. If you enable an access code, do not place one on the mock test so students can always access it.

3. Practice run

It’s important that you allow your students to take the mock test in the room where the actual exam will take place. This is so the traffic of the connections can be safely tested, as well as their devices.

Once a Mock-Test has been created, schedule a practice-run with Technology Support by emailing us at helpdesk@utep.edu with at least 2 weeks’ notice.

4. (Recommended) Save a back up

Create a hard copy backup of your exams in case any students run into unexpected problems on exam day.

Go to your exam and hit the three dots up the upper-right, above the questions. From the options, hit “Print”.

5. Test day

To minimize issues, remind students to connect to the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Wi-Fi (¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ Secure) and stay connected for the entire test.

If you would like a technician from Technology Support to monitor your exam during test day, please contact helpdesk@utep.edu at least 2 weeks prior to the exam date. Please note that technicians will only be able to attend for a maximum of 20 minutes. Technicians also may not be able to attend during busy times in the semester, such as during midterms or finals due to high call volume.

For any other questions or concerns, please contact Technology Support at helpdesk@utep.edu.
