While participating in a J-1 Exchange Visitor program at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ, you are required to follow all regulations associated with your J-1 immigration status. This is known as maintaining status. Maintaining your status is essential to remaining legally in the United States and preserving your eligibility for future immigration benefits.
The responsibilities outlined below apply from the moment you enter the U.S., throughout your academic program, and until you depart the United States or change to another immigration status. Failure to follow these requirements may result in serious immigration consequences.
J-1 students must keep their immigration documents valid and unexpired for the entire duration of their program. You should carry proof of your immigration status and keep copies of all documents in a secure location.
U.S. immigration regulations require all nonimmigrants to report any change of address within 10 days of moving. J-1 students must report updates to OIP so that their SEVIS record remains accurate.
You must report changes to any of the following:
Address and contact updates can be submitted using the appropriate form or by contacting OIP directly at global@utep.edu.

Your primary purpose in the United States as a J-1 student must be participation in the program listed on your DS-2019. You may only engage in activities that are consistent with and authorized by your J-1 program.
Any academic, professional, or experiential activity outside of what is listed on your DS-2019 must be reviewed and approved by OIP before the activity begins.
Employment is not automatically permitted for J-1 students. All employment, including on-campus work, off-campus work, and Academic Training, requires prior authorization.
Do not begin any employment until you have received written authorization from OIP. Working without authorization is a serious violation of J-1 status.
All J-1 exchange visitors are required by the U.S. Department of State to maintain health insurance that meets minimum coverage requirements for the entire duration of their program.
This requirement also applies to any J-2 dependents. Failure to maintain qualifying health insurance may result in termination of your J-1 status.
If you plan to travel outside the United States during your J-1 program, you must ensure that all required documents are valid for re-entry.
Travel signatures must be requested before leaving the United States. Extended international travel or a leave of absence must also be reported to OIP.
You must notify OIP if there are any significant changes to your J-1 program, including:
J-1 students have a 30-day grace period after the program end date to leave the U.S., transfer to another program, or apply for a change of status.
Taking steps toward another U.S. immigration status may affect your J-1 status. This includes applying for a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement or pursuing another visa category.
To understand how these actions may impact your J-1 status, contact OIP before taking any immigration-related steps.
