EPCC and Early College High School Students Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look at TXDOT with CTIS
Prospering through Transportation research together
TRIP TXDOT El Paso HeadquartersAs part of the 2025 Transportation Research Immersive Program (TRIP), sponsored by the Southern Plains Transportation Center (SPTC), students from El Paso Community College (EPCC) and local Early College High Schools recently teamed up with the Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CTIS) for an exclusive visit to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) El Paso Regional Headquarters.
The visit offered students a firsthand look at the people and technology working behind the scenes to keep El Paso’s roads safe and efficient. From traffic signals to pavement testing, students discovered how engineering and science shape the roads we use every day.
TXDOT staff led hands-on demonstrations in the materials lab, where students saw how road materials are tested to ensure they can handle daily traffic and extreme weather. Students also had the opportunity to explore road construction vehicles up close and engage with operators about their work in the field.
TXDOT Visit Picture CompilationA highlight of the visit was touring the traffic management center, where students saw how live camera feeds help monitor traffic flow and keep drivers safe across El Paso. Later, in another part of the tour, they learned how traffic signals across the city are programmed and adjusted to manage congestion and respond to incidents in real time.
Students also explored the planning and design side of transportation, gaining insight into how engineers transform ideas into roads, highways, and intersections that serve El Paso’s growing communities.
This visit was part of CTIS’s commitment to inspiring future engineers and transportation professionals by showing students how their interests in STEM can translate into impactful careers. By stepping into the real-world workspaces of TXDOT, students gained a deeper appreciation for the work that keeps the community connected and moving safely.
