Addiction Studies Minor and Fast-track
Launching Fall 2026
Program Description:
The Minor in Addiction Studies provides students with a comprehensive understanding of addiction, encompassing its biological, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions. This program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the challenges of addiction.
The program is structured to meet the state educational requirements for Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC) when paired with a related major. Students with non-related majors may need to enroll in additional courses to obtain LCDC eligibility. The program includes cross-listed graduate-level courses which can be transferred to the graduate programs in counseling.
Note. According to Texas Health and Human Service, a related major may be chemical dependency counseling, sociology, psychology, or a major related to human behavior and development.
Objectives:
- Students will acquire foundational knowledge about addiction, including its biological, psychological, and social aspects
- Students will develop evidence-based skills for assessing, treating, and supporting individuals with addiction
- Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in counseling, social work, healthcare, criminal justice, and public health.
Who Should Consider This Minor?
The Addiction Studies Minor is designed for students from all majors who are interested in developing knowledge and skills in substance use, addiction treatment, and recovery support.
Program Pathways
Students may complete the minor through three different pathways:
- Minor Only
- Minor + Fast-Track (¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ + Graduate Cross-Listed Courses)
- Fast-Track Only
